QAnon and the Blood Libel as Folklore

"Folklore could have dire consequences...If a better world was to be constructed...then the folk processes by which attitudes were formed and spread needed to be uncovered and understood".

Main Argument

QAnon is recycling an old propagandist, anti semitic story known as the blood libel. Many malicious actors have hurled this conspiracy against a number of targets throughout history - Jews being the most affected. QAnon has all too easily dispersed a well known and horrifically effective accusation against the Democratic Party - many of them Jewish, powerful Jewish media professionals and anyone who they judge to be a threat to their world vision.

THE BLOOD LIBEL

SO, WHAT IS IT THIS BLOOD LIBEL YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT?

The blood libel is an ancient, anti-semitic accusation, a legend, the dark side of folklore, a conspiracy, created as a weapon to vilify an unwanted group of people. The blood libel originally claimed that Jews sacrificed Christian children to harvest their blood. They used this blood for a variety of purposes; as a demonic sacrifice, as an ingredient to fortify their foods. The tales grew more perverse and outrageous throughout the centuries but always maintained the basic storyline that children were being kidnapped and their blood was being harvested by Satanic, inhuman creatures in order to sustain their unholy lives. The blood libel has been easily co-opted throughout the centuries by a number of differing groups in order to carry out unspeakable crimes - the most notorious being the Nazi regime. The Nazis used the blood libel, as well as other propagandist weapons, as justification for the Holocaust.

Much in the way sorcery, illegitimate and dangerous ritual, is typically imputed to the tribe "over there", so popular notions of Jews in medieval and early Europe focused on their preternatural abilities with ritual spells and invocations. Jews were magicians, and in this capacity they needed the ingredients of magic, extending in the popular imagination to blood, eucharist hosts, or children's bodies - all highly charged with substances in Christian Folklore. With Children and hosts, it was often asserted that they would reenact the crucifixion, stabbing repeatedly at the child or wafer (which would  ultimately bleed).
